about

Lost Map Records invite you to return to the splendid isolation of the isle of Eigg, Scotland for the third series of V I S I T ▲ T I O N S – a multi-part set of special limited-edition releases, written and recorded in rural seclusion in a “bothy” cabin on the label’s Hebridean home. The residency programme presents a unique opportunity for exciting label roster acts and guest artists to break away from the connectivity saturated modern world, go off-grid, embrace the inspiring scenery and self-sustaining community spirit of a truly extraordinary island, and focus solely on one project for a concentrated period.

The second artist to be featured as part of V I S I T ▲ T I O N S S03 is Makeness AKA critically-acclaimed electronic sonic explorer Kyle Molleson. Currently based in London, but raised in the Outer Hebrides and south-west England, and previously based in Leeds and Edinburgh, Kyle’s 2018 debut album for Secretly Canadian Records Loud Patterns was hailed by Pitchfork as “dark and dissonant, electronic rock that captures the thrum of cities and the solitude of the country.” Kyle travelled up to Eigg with his good friend, next-door-neighbour and bandmate Gus Beamish-Cook – a Suffolk-born synth-addict, who previously made mind-warping dance-pop rhythms as Bewilderbeast, and who also collaborates on another project with Kyle as Small Car NRG. The pair transformed St Franny’s into a Tardis-like interstellar vehicle, the twinkling lights of various analogue and digital contraptions scattered across every available surface, reflecting the blanket of stars that spilled in through the windows of the long February evenings.

Lost Map’s founder and director Johnny Lynch AKA Pictish Trail writes:

“I remember going up to visit them every so often during their stay, and being blown away by the lushness of the recordings, and the sheer joy instilled in the dancier moments. I’m glad they’ve included the happy-hardcore meets synth-bagpipe hedonism of ‘Eigg Heads’ on their final tracklisting – as it’s a proper knees-up. Towards the end of the week, both Kyle and Gus had made friends with the locals, and by the Friday night were treating them to a taste of the tunes they’d been working on, blasting through the PA system up at the ceilidh hall. That was a fun night.

“It was such a delight to have them visit, and a true thrill to be able to release music that has such a dancefloor feel – easily the most banging music we’ve ever put out on the label. There’s an interview with Kyle and Gus about their experience on the island, in the latest edition of the Lost Map Podcast.”

Previous instalments of V I S I T ▲ T I O N S have led to new music by Monoganon, Free Love, Slow Tree (feat. members of Sea Power) Arthur King (feat. Grandaddy’s Jason Lytle), Rachel Aggs from Sacred Paws, Rozi Plain and Emma Kupa. All of the releases are available to discover and own now.
